Sew Lovely

Can't handle the cuteness!

This adorable dishtowel can be found at Anthropologie here: Sew Lovely dishtowel

I think I will be hanging this on my wall and never let a dish go near it.

Have a good weekend!

Slacker

Hi my name is Abby and I am a slacker. But really, I did three posts and went MIA. Not okay. With the new year comes the stereotypical resolution that I will not neglect my baby (which is my blog of course). Over the past few months I have made some big changes with officially starting grad school and getting my first big girl apartment that I will be moving into in one month (and 2 days, but who is counting) and I have also gotten to do a lot of sewing! Here are some of the quilts I have made and some new works in progress (all the quilts neeed to be quilted still obviously). Next up is working with Amy Butler's gorgeous new line Hapi and another Field Study quilt (it will be my third, can you tell I'm obsessed?). I also have about 15 different garments to make, and I promise to show you some of them that have already been completed soon.

My Scrappy Star quilt, I still need to add the scrappy border

Tula Pink's Heart Quilt. I copied her exact fabrics and layout. Pattern can be found in the Sew Red book here: http://www.amazon.com/Sew-Red-Sewing-Quilting-Womens/dp/1936096552/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1390406281&sr=8-1&keywords=sew+red+sewing+%26+quilting+for+women%27s+heart+health

Field Study Side Braid quilt. I had to take this picture while standing on a chair because it's massive y'all!

Have a Happy Hump Day!

These Boots

Complete sidenote, but that is a fabulous Eric Church song. So is his new single "The Outsiders." Make sure you check it out!  Anyways, I have had an obsession with two tone riding boots ever since I saw them last year. Unfortunately that obsession came with a steep price tag, so I could merely admire them on paper.  Fortunately stores have realized they need to make cheaper and more affordable versions!

Frye Melissa Harness Boots $397.95 at Nordstorm

Until the purchase of the above boots, I have lived in a pair that I got from Target last year. I love them so much infact that I bought two pairs of them. People stop me a lot asking where they are from and are always shocked when they hear Target. The best part is, they are again a great knock off of a pair of Frye boots. They are also real leather so they are built the last.

I have finished some sewing which I will post soon! In the meantime, happy shopping!

Deals and Steals

So as many of my friends and family know, I can be a bit of a shopaholic. However I am an avid discount and deal finding shopper. I am signed up for almost every rewards program and can manage to get a free meal a week out of them. Pretty great for the DC budget. I also have noticed that Target and other companies are doing a fabulous job of knocking off some of my favorite stores like J. Crew. Below are some of the great knock-offs I have found recently (with a little craft project thrown in)!

I have been using this Bobbi Brown foundation since high school and LOVE it. I do not however love spending $40+ on makeup, even if it lasts a long time. Luckily Maybelline just came out with a product that's almost identical and less than $7!

My second love to J. Crew (okay maybe they're tied) would definitely be Target. It's the only place that can make you so happy while making you so broke at the same time. Recently Target has come out with a vest to knock-off one of my all time favorite J. Crew items (that I refuse to buy because a half a coat (aka vest) should not cost $80+)!

J. Crew Herringbone Vest, currently at the Factory for $90
Target vest (comes with a scary huge hood, but it's removable) for $34.99

Lastly comes my favorite craft project that I am definitely breaking the bank for if I don't go broke in Charleston (it's quite possible!). J. Crew has been partnering with Liberty of London for the past few years to make some adorable clothes. The combo of the two names however makes for a very not cute price tag. One of the prints I have been eyeing lately is on this cute shirt for fall:

Liberty ruffled popover in Xanthe sunbeam print
J. Crew Liberty of London top $188
Well I recently decided I am going to really teach myself to sew clothing  (I've made a few dresses/paper bags with sleeves in the past) and discovered that Purl Soho has this exact fabric for sale! With the combo of the Wiksten Tova pattern, I am definitely planning on making my own version of the J. Crew shirt for $100 less!
Liberty of London Red Xanthe Sunbeam $36.50 at Purl Soho

Desk Redo

Over the past 8 years I have moved to a new apartment or state almost every year. From undergrad at Elon, to grad school at South Carolina, moving to Winston-Salem and now DC, some of my furniture has definitely taking a beating. Throughout the process I also decided it was time to be a "grown up" and get "big girl" furniture. However over the past 8 years the same Target children's department desk has stayed with me.
My beloved Target desk

My room has since been updated to not quite match the stark white desk furniture anymore.

This past summer my mom introduced me to the most amazing invention ever....Chalk paint. Chalk paint is a fabulous product that lets you paint with out any priming and on almost any surface. The best part is is it comes in adorable colors! Chalk paint can be a little $$$ but a little bit goes a long way! Annie Sloan and CeCe Caldwell are the two main manufacturers of the paint. So I decided rather than replacing the old desk that I would attempt my first painting project. With my mom's help we decided to pick CeCe Caldwell's paint in Nantucket Spray and Alaskan Tundra Green.

I loved them both equally so she suggested layering the colors (genius!).  I put the Alaskan Tundra Green on first and the Nantucket Spray the next day. The best part was, it took less than 1/2 of a small jar for each layer! Lastly I had the difficult task of picking a new knob to go on the desk and voila!
I definitely will be investing in a new wicker basket that matches a little better. I also purchased this chair over the summer and plan on recovering it. This is where I need your help. I am clueless on what fabric to do that will coordinate with my floral headboard. Here are some thoughts:

Well thanks for reading my very first blog post! I'm taking a week off from work and heading home/Charleston tomorrow! Stay tuned for some major sewing projects!
